Venue History & Information

Spook Hall

Lawrence Memorial Hall or "Spook Hall" is located on block 7, lots 2, 3 on the corner of Hull & First Streets. They dubbed it Spook Hall, not because it is necessarily haunted but because it was a major hall for the ghost town of Jerome.
In 1898 a private residence was on this site.
In 1937 J.C. Penny's Corporation purchased and renovated the garage. They added new facade and did extensive interior renovations. It remained an active store until 1953 when, on December 23rd, it closed its doors for the last time.
In 1954 Lawrence E. Dicus sold the building to the Jerome Historical Society for $10. In 1974 the Society renovated and improved the building by placing concrete foundation supports, installing a new roof, nailing up ceiling tiles, renovating the kitchen and installing new equipment. In addition, Frank Ferrel crafted solid and handsome wood doors for the entrance way.
Today the hall is rented for community events, with storage in the basement for JHS artifact collections and supplies.
